Police officer injured in morning collision
A police officer was sent to hospital after her cruiser collided with another vehicle at the corner of Broughton and Blanshard streets this morning.
The collision took place around 9:20 a.m. when an Integrated Road Safety Unit cruiser abruptly turned left from Broughton Street, cutting off Derek McLatchie as he drove northbound on Blanshard Street.
"It was a green light, and she just cut in front of me," McLatchie said at the scene.
"I just smashed right into her, she didn't even see me."
Victoria Police said speed does not appear to be a factor, and the IRSU officer, thought to be in her 30s, was taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. McLatchie was uninjured, but his vehichle was likely a write-off, he said.
"(The officer) couldn't move her neck or anything, so they took her off in a stretcher, it was pretty bad," he said.
VicPD Const. Mike Russell said the intersection will be shut down for several hours as traffic investigators gather evidence and speak with witnesses.
"The primary thing for our investigators is to find out who had the light," Const. Mike Russell said.
It was not immediately known whether the injured officer was RCMP or with a municipal police force.
