The restaurant business was completely new to Lacey Webster when she came to work at Nando’s at the Millstream Village Shopping Centre, but she was intrigued by the company’s unique concept.
“Before Nando’s I had never worked in a restaurant, but I wanted to experience the hospitality industry,” she says. “When I started, the Millstream Nando’s was the only location on the Island. I had never heard of the restaurant before and was interested in learning more about its uniqueness, and the South African and Portuguese culture it offers.”
Starting first as a “Nandoca” (the special people who serve Nando’s chicken), through the knowledge and experience Webster has gained on the job, she has since been promoted to assistant manager. “I have had the opportunity to put my energy towards more than just serving, and I am constantly learning about growth within the company,” she says.
Looking ahead, “a lot of the knowledge I will carry with me for the rest of my life!”
The atmosphere established throughout Nando’s has been a key factor in the evolution of Webster’s career.
“I love the warm, friendly atmosphere created by staff and customers. My Nando’s family makes coming to work enjoyable and I really appreciate everyone,” she says, pointing out that the community-oriented mindset that values both staff and customers starts at the top.
Whether it’s lending support to community initiatives such as the popular Bras on Broad event for breast cancer research or supporting staff in their own charity projects, the local owners are right on board, Webster notes.
“Recently a few staff members came up with and organized an event called the Broken Bones Slam Jam, with all the proceeds going to local charity,” she notes. “The company and management allow their staff to take the initiative, and hear any input or ideas staff members may have.”
