COMMUNITY NEWS: Victoria hair salon helps Mercy Ships, Silver Threads exits downtown core

Inspire Hair Design is teaming up with Mercy Ships to help women in West Africa suffering from conditions caused by prolonged childbirth.

On June 8 from noon until 5 p.m., stylists will donate 100 per cent of proceeds from customers to Mercy Ships Canada, which operates Africa Mercy, a 450-volunteer ship of surgeons, engineers and even hairstylists that provides care to hard-to-reach communities.

“Kathryn and I opened the salon about 18 months ago,” said Sarah Krook, Inspire employee. “Both of us wanted to combine our passions and create a place where everyone felt good about themselves.”

Silver Threads exits downtown for Jubilee

Victoria’s Silver Threads Service will be moving from its Douglas Street office to the former Canadian Institute for the Blind (CNIB) building at 2340 Richmond Rd.

The City of Victoria will provide a one-time grant of $200,000 to finance the move as well as a continued operating grant of $122,000 for Silver Threads.

The move resolves a decade-old debt that was created when Silver Threads was asked to move from Centennial Square to make way for the current Capital Regional District building in 2004.

Silver Threads has been in city-leased commercial space on Douglas Street since then, awaiting a permanent office solution.

Silver Threads board president Andy Robinson thanked council for the assistance transiting to the new digs.

“We are optimistic that with this decision Silver Threads Service will thrive in a new location,” Robinson said.

“We look forward to building a collaborative, neighbourhood model to serve seniors of Victoria and the Jubilee community.”

View Towers aid boosted by United Way

United Way is providing $13,000 to Red Cross to help View Towers residents with rent, hotel, food and clothing in the wake of a May 15 fire in the building. About 70 people remain displaced from smoke and water damage.
