Victoria to Newfoundland cycle tour raises mental health awareness

Hillary Werthmann committed suicide 10 years ago, at the age of 20. On Wednesday, her father, Bill Werthmann, will head out on a cycle across Canada to raise awareness of mental health.

The trip, which is planned to wrap up in St. John’s, N.L. on July 13, will see Werthmann and two friends commemorate Hillary as they spark conversation around depression, suicide and youth mental health issues.

Werthmann will get a rousing send-off on Tuesday, May 7 at the Alix Goolden Hall, as local musical acts West My Friend, Rosie June, Rick Scott, Valdy and Roy Forbes deliver a musical bon voyage. Tickets for the show are $28 advance, $35 door and are available at the Royal MacPherson box office or Lyle’s Place.

The money raised by the concert will go towards local mental health-related organizations, such as suicide prevention-focused Need 2, which is co-presenting the show.
