The City of Victoria is rolling up its sleeves as the municipality welcomed businesses to participate in the second annual Scrub Up event on Tuesday, May 7.

“It’s free. The city is providing all the pails and the cleaning supplies,” said City of Victoria Mayor Marianne Alto.

Various teams will be around the downtown core, made up of a variety of business owners, managers, and passionate people who want to show they care about their city, Alto said.

“Cleaning up the walls and windows and making the place look better.”

Even though this is the second annual event, The City of Victoria used to run a similar program when the City of Victoria Councillor Helen Hughes was still on the council, said Jeff Bray, executive director of the Downtown Victoria Business Association.

“You want to have a very clean downtown because it is really about community building,” Bray said.

There has been an increase in businesses around the city participating in the Scrub Up event, and some companies will use it to do some team building, Bray said.

“It’s really a fun thing.”

The city looks quite good, according to Bray, and it is about giving the municipality a fresh look and a downtown core to be proud of.

“I was just in Memphis for a conference last week. And I can tell you that the vibrancy and vitality of our street was 10 times what it is in a place like Memphis.”

According to Alto, it is much more about creating a space that people in Victoria can be proud of.

“It’s just like your own house. You want to make sure your house is clean and tidy,” Alto said.
