Langford Fire Rescue provided one engine, one ladder truck and eight firefighters to help fight the blaze. Chief Bob Beckett said Langford does have a mutual aid agreement with Sooke but their help is rarely needed.

"It's unusual that we go to Sooke given the distance," Beckett said. "But given the magnitude of the call, they asked for some additional assistance today and we were happy to accommodate."

"By the time we got there the fire had taken hold and it was more of a defensive operation."
