Esquimalt council gives green light for new group home
Plans to replace an aging and outdated Esquimalt group home, where 20 adults live with severe mental illness, were approved by Esquimalt council Monday night.
A new $3.5-million three-storey, 30-unit supervised care centre will replace two smaller buildings at 1037 and 1039 Lyall St., beside Macaulay elementary school. The re-development will cost $5.8 million.
The Capital Mental Health Association, which owns and operates McCauley Lodge, is seeking funding partners, including $900,000 from the Capital Regional Hospital District board. A vote was scheduled for today (Nov. 9).
If enough funding can be secured, the association will temporarily relocate residents to other mental health care centres next March and April. Construction is scheduled for July and will continue until September 2013.
