Fire reroutes Vic West voters
A small electrical fire Monday at the Vic West Community Centre means the facility can no longer be used as a polling site in this weekend's election.
Instead, nearby residents can head to Vic West elementary school, at 750 Front St., to cast their vote.
General election day happens tomorrow (Nov. 19), from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The fire originated in a panel adjacent to the kitchen.
"At the time, the only occupants in the building were two staff members who immediately called the fire department which responded quickly to put out the fire before major damage occurred," said community association president Nan Judd.
Since the fire, the city has replaced some wiring and a fire-restoration service continues to clean the burnt smell from the air and contents of the building. As a precaution, air quality tests are being conducted.
The centre likely reopens Tuesday (Nov. 22), for all regular programming including before and after-school programs. Check the website for updates.victoriawest.ca.
