Victoria police release identity of cyclist killed in collision

Victoria police have released the name of the Victoria cyclist who was killed in a collision Monday afternoon.

Mark Phillip Metcalfe, 50, died en route to hospital after he and a dump truck collided at the corner of Burnside Road West and Harriet Road.

The investigation, conducted by the Victoria Police Department's crash team, revealed Metcalfe and the dump truck were both travelling eastbound on Burnside Road West at the time.

It is too soon to tell whether charges will be laid, VicPD spokesperson Mike Tucker said, adding that investigators continue to analyze physical evidence and witness statements.

The traffic fatality is Victoria's second this year. An 80-year-old male driver died after his car ran off Lampson Street Esquimalt and hit a wall.
