B.C. Transit ready for road conditions

Plan ahead, leave early and be patient. That is the advice from B.C. Transit when coping with winter travel.

"If the condition on the roads isn't bad, then service should be fine as long as there are no accidents," said Maureen Sheehan, B.C. Transit spokesperson.

She said B.C. Transit crews are out early in the morning assessing the roads and continue to monitor them throughout the day when snow or icy conditions prevail.

"The municipal crews are really great, and we have a really good relationship with them. They keep in contact with us as well,"she said.

Trouble spots include the Western Communities and Sooke which tend to get larger amounts of snow accumulation.

"That's where the road conditions are often difficult. Certain areas of East Sooke and Metchosin, Parklands hill in Esquimalt" said Sheehan. "Hills and rural areas are probably affected more than urban areas."

Road conditions can change quickly during storms and snow-related accidents can cause buses to get off schedule, she said.

"It takes time for the information to funnel through to us. People need to remember to plan ahead and dress warmly in case they have to stand and wait. There could be an accident or something on the road blocking us that we are not expecting."
