King of the snakes
Deer, birds and raccoons might be common wildlife found in Saanich backyards. Three-foot long California king snakes, not so much.
On Sunday evening a resident in the 900 block of McBriar Ave. in the Blenkinsop area spotted an “obviously non-indigenous” snake in his backyard, said Saanich police Sgt. Dean Jantzen.
Saanich officers managed to corral the snake, native to Arizona, California and Mexico, into a garbage can. It was transported to the Capital Regional District animal shelter.
The non-venomous snake is often kept as a pet. Anyone who is missing a California king snake can call the shelter at at 250-658-5745 or Saanich police at 250-475-4321.
Possible cougar sighting near UVic
On Monday two young people saw what they thought was cougar in Haro Woods, a forested area on the south edge of the University of Victoria.
The youths were riding their bikes through the woods at about 7 p.m. and saw a large cat, which looked like images of cougars they later looked up on the Internet. Saanich police say the cougar ran off and wasn't acting aggressively toward the kids.
Police say the sighting is unconfirmed, but people in the area should keep dogs on a leash and children nearby. Saanich has had multiple confirmed cougar sightings this summer, mainly in rural areas.
