Tour de Rock riders roll into Victoria
There were funny moments, touching moments and proud moments after the Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock riders arrived at their final destination Friday in Victoria.
The team rode their final few kilometres to a hero's welcome at Centennial Square, where supporters and public well-wishers gathered to pay tribute to the riders, all but four of whom were members of a police organization.
Those in attendance met the junior riders – current and former pediatric cancer patients – who inspired the actual riders through the tough moments riding from Port Alice on the north Island to Victoria. Spectators heard stories from the road that gave a sense of how tight the team members became through months of training and 12 days on the actual ride.
Event host Mira Laurence of CTV Vancouver Island told the crowd how local high schools rallied behind the cause and raised thousands of dollars, through head shaves, leg waxings and other events. Reynolds secondary continued to "blow away" everyone in the fundraising department, bringing in $101,000 with this year's campaign.
Final totals will be forthcoming as the donations continue to roll in. Watch www.vicnews.com for updates.
