Wi-Fi expansion eyed for Oak Bay
Municipal council has begun discussions with Shaw Communications which could result in an extension of Wi-Fi access to about 60 per cent of Oak Bay residents.
“The service would be available to all Shaw subscribers in our community,” said Mayor Nils Jensen.
The discussions are part of Shaw’s program to extend network access outside the home for Shaw customers.
The Shaw Exo Wi-Fi network plan would involve the establishment of approximately 40 access points throughout Oak Bay as well as a number of hot spots located in a variety of business and other locations.
It would allow Shaw customers to take the internet on the road in Oak Bay, said Kara Bussey, a Shaw spokesperson.
Jensen said the proposal also includes potential access to non-Shaw Internet users during large scale events in Oak Bay.
“We’re one of the first to move on this,” said Jensen. “It’s really leading edge.”
