A Victoria man somehow survived a "spectacular" crash near the intersection of Hillside Avenue and Cedar Hill Road early this morning.

The driver of a Nissan hatchback lost control and slammed into a utility pole at 4:15 a.m., totaling the vehicle.

When Victoria Police and Victoria Fire Department arrived, it took nearly an hour to remove the pinned and severely injured driver, police said.

The man was rushed to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

VicPD is still on scene since and is trying to determine what caused the crash, investigating whether speed or road conditions were a factor.
