Bikes versus cars in Oak Bay
Two crashes involving cyclists last week left two with injuries.
At 10:30 a.m. on Dec.19, police were called to Gordon Head Road at the western entrance to UVic where a cyclist had struck the rear of a northbound car turning right.
The 28-year-old male driver of a 2008, Ford Fusion had passed the cyclist and signalled to make a right turn. The 26-year-old female cyclist did not react in time and stated that her brakes did not seem to be working correctly. She struck the rear of the vehicle and fell from her bike, hitting her head. She was not wearing a helmet and was taken to hospital by ambulance. She was released from hospital later in the day.
At 3 p.m. Dec. 22, a cyclist was struck in the intersection of Oak Bay Avenue and Monterey Avenue.
The 42-year-old man was northbound on Monterey Avenue when a 90-year-old woman, driving a 2005 Lexus southbound, turned in front of him. The cyclist ended up on the hood of the Lexus as it completed its turn. Witnesses told police the cyclist was yelling at the driver to stop as he lay on the hood.
The Lexus did stop for a short period of time before driving off. When police caught up to the elderly driver shortly after, she had no recollection of the collision. She was charged under the Motor Vehicle Act and her ability to hold a driver’s licence will be reviewed.
Police say the woman has agreed not to drive. The cyclist was taken to hospital and released the same day having suffered some damage to his face but no broken bones.
