Sparks fly, driver fleeing in stolen vehicle tumbles power pole in Esquimalt
An early morning joyride was cut short by a hydro pole for the occupants of a stolen truck last week.
On Wednesday at around 3:15 a.m., VicPD officers noticed a pickup without a front license plate speeding along Craigflower Road near Lampson Street.
When officers attempted to pull the vehicle over for the traffic violation, the driver took off at high speed, blowing through a red light and narrowing missing another police cruiser.
Police then witnessed an explosion, as the truck collided with a hydro pole, knocking live wires to the ground.
Officers were held at bay because of the wires, but soon determined the driver had somehow escaped the scene of the crash.
VicPD and Saanich Police Department K9 units called to the scene were unable to locate the driver or passengers.
Upon running the rear plate of the 2013 Ford F350 truck, it was determined to have been reported stolen.
