Legion development advances to public input

Esquimalt councillors faced a packed council meeting Monday as they approved the first stages of a rezoning application for the Legion development.

The mixed-use building at 622 Admirals Rd. would include 140 seniors independent living apartments, 12 units reserved for veterans, plus commercial space.

"With the concerns we heard, I'd say parking remains a concern (for residents)," said Mayor Barb Desjardins.

The proposal now proceeds to a public hearing, which should take place within the next month, Desjardins added.

"I think there's an opportunity here to address the (parking) challenge going forward. Esquimalt needs this, but there's some tweaking to do," said Coun. Dave Hodgins.

The proposal will still need to undergo review by the township's design panel after zoning is approved.

Additional amenities such as the implementation of public art could be included at this stage, Desjardins said.
