Saanich woman dies after condo fire

A Saanich woman died last night in hospital following a condo fire yesterday.

Saanich Fire Department were called to 4490 Chatterton Way after someone spotted smoke on the third floor.

Fire fighters rescued an unconscious female from the affected suite and provided emergency medical care. The British Columbia Ambulance Service took over and transported the patient to hospital in critical condition.

The fire was controlled and extinguished by the buildings sprinkler system. Fire fighters ensured that the fire did not extend beyond the area of origin and all other occupants were safe and accounted for. Fire, smoke, and water damage is confined to the affected suite, with water damage to the suites below.

Damage is estimated at $60,000.

Some residents will be displaced and temporary housing will be provided through Saanich’s Emergency Social Services.

The cause of the fire is undetermined but not considered suspicious.
