Saanich scraps bike fest due to volunteer shortage
Saanich’s annual Cycling Festival is annual no more.
The festival had become a popular springtime event that included a family-friendly road ride along Shelbourne Street and a fun afternoon of entertainment and games, but was cancelled this week due to a lack of volunteers.
Originally scheduled for April 27, Saanich’s community events co-ordinator said the bicycle and pedestrian committee scrapped the 2014 event because they were competing for volunteers with TC10K organizers.
“We need to make sure we safely man our routes. The majority of our regular volunteers are connected and participating in the TC10K, so the pool we normally draw from was not available,” said Rob Phillips.
Committee members looked at other possible weekends, but none worked well.
“Pushing it back into May, we start competing with even more events,” Phillips said. “So before the massive marketing went out, the group decided to pull the plug, regroup, and try again for next year.”
The Saanich Cycling Festival was usually held to recognize Earth Day, which is April 22 this year.
