Man banned from Vancouver Island arrested at Tillicum Mall

A man who had been ordered to stay away from his alleged domestic-violence victim -- and Vancouver Island -- was arrested Sunday when a concerned citizen saw a man drag a woman by the arm at Tillicum Mall and called police, Saanich police said.

The man, 27, who is a resident of the Lower Mainland, was waiting for a verdict on a previous domestic assault file and was out on a conditional release.

The woman, who turned out to be the man’s previous alleged victim, tried to help the man evade police at the scene.

“When the female saw the police officers observing them, she alerted the male, who ducked into an aisle to avoid detection,” said Sgt. Steve Eassie. “Police were able to detain him for an assault investigation.”

The man is still in custody waiting for a future court date.

Saanich police were thankful for the quick thinking of the witness at the scene.

“The awareness of the witness in this case, who followed their gut instinct, may have prevented a domestic violence victim from being victimized once again.”
