Deck fire an early wake-up call for Saanich homeowners

Families were roused a little earlier than normal this morning in Saanich's Cordova Bay neighbourhood thanks to a deck fire.

Around 6:30 a.m., Saanich Fire Department headed to the 5300-block of Sayward Hills Cres. with two engines, two ladder trucks, a rescue truck, command vehicle and 18 fire fighters for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters found the fire confined to the rear deck of the single family dwelling and quickly extinguished it.

Cause of the fire is under investigation, but damage is estimated at $15,000.
