Saanich Police efforts to target speeding drivers hit a roadblock following the theft of a speed reader board.

Police noticed the traffic safety device had been stolen from the 4700 block of Interurban Road, where it had been installed March 10, when officers went to move the board to a new location on March 14.

“The theft of this speed reader board will greatly impact service delivery to our community” said Sgt. Jereme Leslie. “We rely on this type of technology to help us distribute our resources and keep over 600 kilometres of Saanich roads safe.”

Leslie said thieves smashed the lock that was securing the reader board. Police contacted All Traffic Solutions, the maker of the speed reader board, however, the GPS unit had been disabled and was last known to be in the area of Vanalman and Glanford Avenues on March 14.

The speed reader board, used by Saanich Police to gather data on speeding, has an estimated value of $5,300 and is described as an electronic black sign that measures 24 inches by 17 inches and weighs approximately 20 pounds.

Anyone with information on the theft is asked to contact the Saanich Police at 250-475-4321 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) where you can remain anonymous.
