LETTER: I’m dreaming of a PC Christmas, more songs to avoid this holiday season

As those Sidney residents still brave enough to risk going carol singing start warming up, a word of warning – 2018 is shaping up to be the most PC Christmas ever.

Here are some tips to avoid being arrested by the PC police or harangued by your PC neighbours. Firstly be very careful with traditional Christmas carols especially those which might be deemed sexist such as “God Rest You, Merry Gentlemen”, “We Three Kings”, “Good King Wenceslas”, “While Shepherds Watched”, “Little Drummer Boy”, etc. Also avoid anything which might be deemed exclusionary to other faiths or atheists such as “O Come All Ye Faithful”.

It is not just carols but Christmas songs that are also under threat this year. In particular the whole climate change debate is very hot so do avoid such Christmas songs as “White Christmas”, “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!,” “Winter Wonderland”, etc. Instead of receiving a figgy pudding and a wassail from your neighbour, you may face an apoplectic sermon from a global warmer.

Beyond the obvious ones above some songs are just plain wrong. For example in Sidney, “Grandma got run over by a reindeer” is a non starter. With our plethora of mobility scooters well known, the reverse is far more likely.

Bah Humbug! Aw what the heck – Merry Christmas everyone!
