Chargers women playoff bound; Vikes host T-Birds
The Camosun Chargers women’s basketball team is going to the B.C. College’s Athletic Association playoffs.
Both the Chargers men’s and women’s basketball teams swept the visiting Langara Falcons at the Pacific Institute for Sports Excellence gym.
The Chargers women swept the Langara Falcons 73–55 on Friday and 68–57 on Saturday, clinching a spot in the BCCAA playoffs.
Camosun’s dynamic duo of Aija Salvador and Chelsea McMullen were dominant again. Salvador continued her oustanding rookie campaign with 26 points on Saturday, McMullen with 27 points on Friday.
Columbia Bible College hosts the BCCAA provincial championships, Mar. 3-5.
Boy’s come alive
The hard working Chargers men’s team defeated Langara 74-60 on Friday before winning in double overtime on Saturday, 104-101.
A win against the province’s top seed Vancouver Island Mariners this weekend would greatly help the Chargers’ (8-9) chances at a spot in the provincials. Douglas College and Langara are chasing the Chargers. Both are one win back but can pass the Chargers as each have an extra game yet to play.
The Chargers women’s volleyball team ended the regular season with a sweep of the College of the Rockies Avalanche in straight sets.
Camosun is ranked No. 5 going into the college provincials, hosted by the UBC Okanagan Heat, Feb. 24-26.
The Chargers men’s team split their weekend with a win and a loss against COTR. The men’s season comes to an end with a record of 3-11.
Vikes host T-birds
The UVic Vikes CIS regular season comes to an end with a visit from rivals UBC Thunderbirds this weekend, Feb. 19-20.
Proceeds from the Feb. 18 will be donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, women at 6 p.m., men at 8 p.m.
Feb. 19 the Vikes will retire the jersey of alum Gerald Kazanowski at halftime of the men’s game.
Win or lose, the Vikes men (15-7) will face Alberta in the best-of-three, Canada West quarter-final series Feb. 25-27. UVic can host it if they defeat UBC once.
The Vikes women play their quarter-final series on the road, Feb. 25-27, whether they finish fifth or sixth place.
