Victoria athletes shining in UBC colours
A cross section of Victoria athletes at the University of B.C. are coming off a huge weekend.
Brad Hoban, a rookie with the Thunderbirds hockey team, scored his first Canada West hat trick and an assist in Friday's (Jan. 11) 7-1 win in Lethbridge. Hoban added another assist on Jan. 12 as UBC won again. The former Swift Current Broncos forward is second in team scoring with the Thunderbirs.
Fellow Victoria native Jason Yee, a long time Powell River Kings member, scored a goal and an assist in the Friday win over Lethbridge.
Stelly's grad Leigh Stansfield led the women's basketball team to a pair of wins. She tied a career-high 23 points on Friday and added 10 more on Saturday. Stansfield is making her final season at UBC a career year, averaging 14.9 points a game, good for 11th in the Canada West, just ahead of UVic's Jessica Renfrew.
Spectrum grad Shanice Marcelle led her UBC volleyball team in kills on Friday with 12 and hit seven more on Saturday as her team swept the Winnipeg Wesmen. The Thunderbirds is Canada's top-ranked women's team and has won 18 straight sets.
