Greater Victoria teams sweep Island girls high school hoops openers

Some local rivalries will be stoked further tonight, as the Vancouver Island high school AAA girls basketball semifinals heat up the gym at Claremont secondary.

South Island top seed Oak Bay Breakers take on South No. 3 Mount Douglas at 6:45 p.m., followed by the feature game, Claremont (South 2) against Spectrum (South 4) at 8:30 p.m.

Oak Bay and Claremont have been ranked in the province's top 10 most of the season.

The Breakers beat Stelly's in Thursday's opener, while Mount Doug downed Port Alberni (North 2). Spectrum got past North top seed Dover Bay of Nanaimo in its opener, while Claremont beat Campbell River's Carihi (North 3).

The semifinal losers drop to their respective loser's bracket semis Saturday at 9:15 and 11 a.m. The third-place game is set for 4 p.m. tomorrow, while the championship game tips off at 6:00.

The two finalists automatically qualify for the provincial tournament, set for March 5 to 8 at the Langley Events Centre. The third-place finisher must win a challenge game against a Lower Mainland team to qualify for the B.C.s.

Spectators are welcome at this weekend's games. Claremont secondary is at 4980 Wesley Rd. in Saanich.
