Oak Bay started strong at the AAA boys' provincial basketball championships last week. Really strong. The Bays almost knocked off the Burnaby South Rebels, who were recently ranked number one in B.C.

The Bays ultimately lost to the Burnaby South Rebels in the opener, 78-72, on Wednesday.

Drake Downer and Evan Woodson each scored 22 points to keep pace with the Rebels.

Oak Bay then rebounded with a powerful win over Fleetwood (Surrey), 87-59, on Thursday. But the run ended there with a loss to Walnut Grove (Langley) 90-77 on Friday.

In Saturday’s consolation match the Bays fell to Tamanawis (Surrey), 89-77.
