Friends of Uplands Park Society invites residents to enjoy the camas meadows at the peak of their beauty and celebrate the cultural and ecological importance of the plant.
Local band the Bald Eagles perform and Oak Bay mayor and council will greet folks for the annual Camas Day celebration May 5, says organizer Margaret Lidkea.
“We’ll have 12 to 15 different organizations with displays. We’ll have wildflower walks with our experts Wylie Thomas and Matt Fairbarns,” she said. “The last couple of years we’ve had about 400 people come out. It’s an educational opportunity where they learn and get a chance to talk to other people about it.”

There will also be kids activities, refreshments and prizes.
“It is a party so it honours all the volunteers who have come to help restoration in this globally endangered ecosystem,” Lidkea said. “This is a way of us showing our appreciation of those volunteers. And of course it’s our heritage. It’s Oak Bay’s heritage and it’s extremely culturally important to the Songhees and Esquimalt nations.”
Camas Day is May 5 from noon to 3 p.m. at the grassy field entrance to Cattle Point in Uplands Park.
