One park promise fulfilled, one to go

From a pile of rubble will soon rise a new park for Burnside Gorge neighbourhood.

The transformation will fulfill a 2007 promise by the City of Victoria made to the community to replace lost green space eaten up by the construction of the Burnside Gorge Community Centre.

The soon-to-be park is located at 3130 Napier Lane. The city purchased the commercial property and has since leased its building to three small businesses. Demolition of the building began early this month.

The new park will come under the Cecelia Ravine Park Management Plan, currently being finalized with input from the community. Targeted improvements include a sports court for youth, a community garden, and bike skills park.

The community, however, is still waiting for the city to make good on another promise. In this year’s capital budget, the city has set aside $2 million to replace the green space lost to the new homeless shelter, called Rock Bay Landing.
