Fall is in the air. The warm summer evenings have started to fade and the leaves are beginning to turn. But on the bright side, hockey season is here. Here are five things to do around Greater Victoria this weekend both on and off the ice.
Catch the Canucks – The Vancouver Canucks are holding their training camp at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria from Thursday to Sunday (Sept. 21-24). Tickets are $5 per day, with four sessions running from 10 a.m. to 1:40 p.m. A scrimmage will be held on Saturday from 10:30 to 11:40 a.m., with warmup at 10 a.m. and a brief 20-minute practice starting at 12:20 p.m.
Toy Story – Kids and kids at heart rejoice, Victoria Ultimate Toy Fair returns to Pearkes Recreation Centre Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 23 and 24) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A variety of vendors will be on hand with action figures, vintage toys, models, trains, comics, dolls, Lego, video games, Hot Wheels and more. Cost is $5 for adults, free for kids.
Agricultural Roots – The Luxton Fall Fair returns to Langford this weekend, running noon to 10 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. The midway will also be running Friday from 3 to 10 p.m. The Luxton Fairgrounds, located off Sooke Road, will be filled with exhibits from blacksmithing and antique farm equipment to miniature trains. There will also be baking competitions, kids crafts and games, and what fair would be complete without chicken agility races.
The Puck Drops – The Vancouver Canucks aren’t the only game in town this weekend as the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League is in full swing. The Saanich Predators host the Oceanside Generals Friday (Sept. 22) at George Pearkes Arena, while the Comox Valley Glacier Kings are at Panorama Recreation Centre to take on the Peninsula Panthers.
Stepping Up Support – The Healing Hearts Run takes place Saturday (Sept. 23) from 10 a.m. to noon at Royal Roads University. The second-annual event aims to raise $55,000 to provide support for those who experience miscarriage or pregnancy loss. You can register at pacificperinatalfoundation.com.
