A Victoria radio host known for giving back has been given a coveted national broadcasting award.

Brittany King, host of 107.3 KOOL FM’s midday show for the past two years, is the 2012 recipient of the Jim Waters Broadcaster of the Year in honour of Steve Young Award.

Recipients of the award are considered rising stars in the Canadian broadcasting industry.

“I was honestly so stunned to have won the young broadcaster of the year award. I mean, it’s Canada-wide,” King said. “Of course, you always work your hardest all the time, and would whether there’s an award attached to it or not.

“But it’s just such an honour to be recognized by my management and within the industry.”

King, 26, was selected because of her work on the radio show and her community involvement.

The Saanich resident, who grew up in North Saanich and graduated from Glenlyon Norfolk School in Victoria, rode in the 2011 Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock charity cycling event. She also volunteers with the Victoria YMCA.

She is also planning to run in the Peninsula Runners Oak Bay KOOL Half Marathon in May, in support of Help Fill a Dream Foundation.

“It feels good to get out there and just get involved in the community that’s given me so much,” King said.

She will be recognized at an awards show during the 28th Canadian Music Week in Toronto in March. More than 2,000 of the industry’s top professionals attend the four-day conference and music festival.
