Big hearts at Carlton House are making sure the homeless in Victoria feel warmth and love this holiday season. For the last 10 years, knitters living in the residence have come together to knit scarves and blankets for the homeless and for those facing challenging times.

The cozy gifts usually get delivered to Our Place but have also been sent to organizations that support women seeking refuge from violence.

“The ladies have done a fabulous feat of knitting over 60 scarves,” says Shelley de Hoog, manager of Leisure Services at Carlton House.

The group knits all year long in anticipation of the holiday season. They deliver the scarves and blankets themselves and have been very moved by the process. Meeting those that receive the scarves, motivates the group to knit even more.

“We’ve been welcomed with open arms,” says knitter Alice Zajac.

This year’s load of scarves and blankets will be taken to Our Place next week.

“We’ve got four huge bags full. It kind of makes you feel like Santa going downtown,” says de Hoog.
