Downtown Victoria urban race expected to draw hundreds

Registration is now open for the UrbaCity Challenge.

A downtown Victoria "mini Amazing Race" is taking place once again this June with hundreds of local businesses participating.

Registration is now open for the UrbaCity Challenge, an urban adventure race and fundraiser for The Prostate Centre on June 8.

"We had a couple of hundred racers last year, and we're looking at doubling that amount this year," said Regan Forrester, event co-ordinator.

Hosted by Maximus Canada since 2010, UrbaCity is marketed as a strategic adventure race that begins at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre and winds its way through downtown to various challenge stations.

Teams of two and four are encouraged to raise minimum pledges to compete, while corporate team categories will add to the playful competition, Forrester said.

To switch up the course from previous years, Maximus brought in Jonathan Willcocks of Pinnacle Pursuits. The outdoor adventurist is Island born and raised, but works out of Vancouver to create corporate and friendly competition events across the globe.

"The race is a ton of fun, but there will be a whole lot of new challenges, so if you'e done it before, you'll be impressed and we think you'll definitely return," Forrester said.

Teams can choose from brain, brawn or ultra racer categories, while corporate teams can register to face-off against one another.
