Firefighters have big boots to fill

Boot drive underway May 27-28

Greater Victoria firefighters are taking their boots off for a fundraising drive.

Firefighters will be out later this month, collecting donations for Muscular Dystrophy Canada with a goal of aiding reasearch into the group of neuromuscular diseases that, as of yet, have no cure.

Last year, the drive raised $61,000 and firefighters hope people will come out again to fill their boots for the cause.

"We hold out our boots because we are committed to helping people with this devastating disorder," said Lt. Mike Kaye, of Saanich Fire Department. "There is nothing more fulfilling than knowing that they money we raise is helping people in our community."

Muscular dystrophy causes weakness that can become fatal.

Firefighters will be out in various locations from the West Shore to downtown to the suburbs on May 27 and 28, collecting donations.
