Giving an old prayer new meaning

Victoria conference explores the Lord’s Prayer

A prayer about revolution and change may be just what is needed to infuse Christian churches with new life and members.

A different, more historically accurate meaning of the Lord’s Prayer, known by billions of Christians around the world, is explored in a book written by former Catholic priest and early Christianity expert John Dominic Crossan.

The Florida-based writer will bring the message he explores in *****The Greatest Prayer: Rediscovering the Radical Message of the Lord's Prayer to the Church of St. John the Divine Anglican Church in Victoria this weekend.

Thanks to Crossan, “all of a sudden Jesus is much different than what we thought and much more important,”  said Rev. Harold Munn, adding that through Crossan's research the Lord's Prayer "is a prayer for a call for change."

"It's about revolution,” said Munn, who leads the St. John the Divine congregation.

"What I find most rewarding is the very large number of people in churches across the U.S. and Canada who find that my vision of Jesus is authentically liberating," he told the **News.

If Christian churches don't embrace fresh ideas, they'll be in trouble.

“Personally I think if it doesn’t happen there will be no church left,” Munn said.

The four-lecture conference is $90, $80 for students and happens March 18 to 20 at 1611 Quadra St. Crossan is also preaching at the Sunday church service at 10 a.m.
