B.C. SPCA asks for public’s help in funding care

An owl at the B.C. SPCA’s Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre (ARC) is in need of a little tender loving care and staff at the Metchosin facility are hoping members of the public will help out.

Rescued by a Good Samaritan, the great horned owl was underweight and had problems with one of her eyes when she was brought to Wild ARC.

“She was very skinny – the problems with her eye were most likely caused by head trauma,” said assistant manager Meg Hatch in a statement. “She was very quiet and not very responsive at first and her eye continued to deteriorate, so it was decided the best option would be to remove the eye completely.”

A local veterinarian volunteered her services for the procedure and not long after, the owl started to bounce back to life.

“She’s doing great. She’s been moved to our outdoor flight pen where she has more room to fly and has been hunting prey successfully,” Hatch said, adding once the animal has recovered she will be released back into the wild.

But the cost of this treatment and recovery is expected to total more than $4,000, even with the efforts from a team of volunteers. The B.C. SPCA and Wild ARC are asking for the public’s help by donating to this cause and others.

You can donation online at spca.bc.ca/donate or in person at Wild ARC, 1020 Malloch Rd.
