Hand-drawn map of Victoria neighbourhood created to inspire residents

A University of Victoria student and artist is finding ways to creatively support and inspire area residents.

Masami Teramachi, born and raised in Gifu – a small city in Japan – drew a walking map of the Fernwood neighbourhood where she now resides, using hand-drawn illustration and watercolour techniques.

Inspired to help locals rediscover their own backyard with a fresh pair of eyes, Teramachi figured with her background in business and art, a meaningful map might be the perfect way to do that.

Teramachi highlighted her personal favourite spots and how to best enjoy those particular areas. She is especially motivated by the idea of encouraging residents to support local shops and cafes in their neighbourhood.

“I love walking and exploring new areas such as pretty little libraries, local cafes, napping spots and secret paths,” she said. “We can find joy and happiness around us and in ourselves rather than seeking it somewhere far.”

Teramachi moved to Victoria a year ago and finds the city fascinating and beautiful. She is studying business at UVic and plans to take what she has learned back to her hometown to help local businesses thrive there.

“There are so many treasures in Gifu, yet they don’t know how to market, so those treasures go unseen and I want to be the one to support them,” she said.

The map can be found at several shops in the Fernwood and North Park neighbourhoods. Teramachi continues to look for places and stores willing to distribute it, free of charge. The North Park Community Association stepped in to help with printing costs.
