Lanterns, origami in Esquimalt Gorge Park to honour victims of Japanese war bombings

Anniversary of Second World War nuclear explosions to honour victims

The 67th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is being commemorated this Thursday (Aug. 9) at Esquimalt-Gorge Park on Tillicum Road.

The program begins at 7 p.m. with the creation and decorating of origami cranes and lanterns. Words and songs of peace get underway at 7:30 p.m., after which the lanterns will be floated in the Gorge Waterway. Lanterns with battery-operated candles can be placed on the lawns in the park.

The event, sponsored by the Victoria Raging Grannies, Physicians for Global Survival, Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society, Victoria Peace Coalition, The Council of Canadians – Victoria, is open to all. It is suggested to bring a blanket or a lawn chair to sit on.
