Learn what you need after the Big One hits

Oak Bay Emergency Program has three upcoming information sessions

Oak Bay’s Emergency Program hosts a disaster recovery information session Feb. 12 at the Monterey Centre.

Fire Chief Darren Hughes said the session is less about what to do during an emergency, but rather how to best handle the aftermath. The session will give an overview of what residents should have at the ready, and the different hazards in their home. Hughes hopes that the event will help people overcome their fears of disasters.

“A big component of that is living your life every day being prepared,” said Hughes. “People many times don’t think of those immediate things that you need. Some people need a medication every day, and if we had a major earthquake and they were near the end of their supply, where are they going to get that critical medication that they need?”

After the tsunami warning last year, Hughes said there was an increase in attendance which has since returned to more normal levels. He said this is the type of event that should be attended once every few years to get up to speed on best practices.

“Once you’ve had the presentation show that level of interest and commitment to being prepared, you’ve become engaged and you can seek out some extra information,” Hughes said.

The session runs from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 12. There are also other sessions in Oak Bay on March 12 and May 14.
