Finding love after 60 can be difficult.

But instead of giving up on love, more seniors are turning to online dating to find their perfect match, according to Dr. Diana Wiley, a Seattle-based sex, marriage and family therapist, and gerontologist.

Through her work, Wiley has found that many people often put their love life on the back burner once they reach a certain age, but she believes emotional and physical intimacy can be the fountain of youth for an aging person. Studies have shown that sexual expression is good for the heart, the immune system, controlling pain, stress and depression, and even though there can be some physical challenges as one gets older, Wiley said there are plenty of natural fixes.

“So many older people are just touch deprived. I think one of the reasons old ladies get their hair done a lot is it's a way to be touched,” said Wiley, who sees many couples in their 50s, 60s and occasionally 70s trying to revitalize their sex life.

“It makes a big difference to remain sexy and have a hot sexual life.”

With the help of Dr. Watler Bortz, a clinical professor of Medicine at Stanford University, Wiley put together an aging test, which she often gives to audiences during lectures. The test measures daily progress in four areas essential to successful aging: moving, thinking, making love and pursuing life's meaning, however that's defined.

One point is awarded each time someone exercises, reads a book, makes love or puts their sensual self in action. Two points are given if they pursue the meaning of life. The maximum daily score is five points and the maximum weekly score is 35. The activities, noted Wiley, are all significant towards having a better quality of life.

“It's to help a person determine whether they are working towards 100 or sliding through life,” said Wiley. “All of these are use it or lose it kind of things.”

On Friday, Feb. 24, Wiley will be bringing her entertaining and lighthearted presentation on Romance, Relationships and Ageless Love after 60 to Victoria. The presentation is part of a new Ageless Love Series at Silver Threads Service for seniors, designed for those who are looking to build healthy, positive relationships either with their existing partner or a new one.

Workshops and presentations will also take place on online dating, how to navigate the dating world and social events such as fun mixers. Wiley's presentation takes place from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Silver Threads Service Victoria Centre, located at 2340 Richmond Rd.
