Occupy Victoria is part of new international movement that takes power away from the rich and senior governments and gives it to cities and their people.
And that's a good thing, says Dr. Warren Magnusson, a University of Victoria political scientist.
It is a "break from state-centric conceptions of politics in favor of approaches that put the city at the centre of our political thinking," says Magnusson.
A free public lecture – Occupy Victoria: Seeing Like a City – Magnusson plans to give Nov. 17 will describe how the recent movement to occupy cities around world also raises both theoretical and practical issues.
Magnusson will outline what this means for the public as well as economic growth and development.
"The recent movement to occupy cities around the world raises both theoretical and practical issues with respect to the 'right to the city' (a term coined by French philosopher Henri Lefebvre more than 40 years ago)," he said.
In his latest book, Politics of Urbanism: Seeing Like a City, Magnusson argues for "a break from state-centric conceptions of politics in favour of approaches that put the city at the centre of our political thinking."
His lecture takes place from 4-5 p.m in the David Lam Auditorium of UVic's MacLaurin Building, and is part the speaker series presented by UVic’s Centre for Co-operative and Community-Based Economy.
