Sidney resident Joanne Egan is selling upcycled and refurbished pieces of furniture with proceeds going to a pair of charities.

Assisted by two friends, Egan refurbished donated pieces of furniture in a shabby-chic style and plans to sell them in a French Shabby Sale.

Refurbishment costs, such as paint and glue, came out of the friends’ own pockets as they are keen for all proceeds to go directly to the chosen charities – the Alzheimer’s Society of BC and Crohn’s Colitis Canada. Egan has suffered from Crohn’s for 47 years and her husband lives in a residential care home after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

“When you get a diagnosis like that, I’m an independent person, but boy, I didn’t know what to do or where to go,” she said of Alzheimer’s. “I pressed fast-forward to the end of my husband’s life and it was too much to handle.”

Egan credits the Alzheimer’s Society of BC with helping her navigate that difficult time, putting on educational workshops, informative talks and offering financial assistance.

“Knowledge is power. There are bad days and rough spots still, but doing this project has been so therapeutic.”

Egan said she loves thrift shopping and fell in love with the shabby-chic style from her visits to France. She says she is grateful to members of the community who have donated pieces and says she has a network of “pickers and sourcers,” who find and deliver items to her.

Although Egan has only been upcycling furniture since October, thanks to her and her friends’ energy, they already have a full collection of items for sale, including dressers, tables and chairs, cabinets, beds and china.

At the sale there will be representatives from the two charities to talk about the Altzheimer’s and Crohn’s, and Egan says she has priced all items to sell, so people can expect some good deals.

The sale takes place May 4 and 5, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 9500 Lochside Dr.
