Volunteer green team joins forces to restore local habitats

Partnerships with schools educate and facilitate remediations

The Greater Victoria Green Team is a regional-wide environmental volunteer program which organizes meet-ups aimed at cleaning up the Capital Regional District.

Last Thursday, March 15th and Friday, March 16th, the GV Green Team participated in hands-on educational activities in Portage Park with View Royal Elementary students. Green Team volunteers and View Royal students planted Big-leaf Maple Trees, Indian-plum shrubs, and Ocean Spray. The projected was funded by the Town of View Royal, Canada Post Foundation, and View Royal students-parents.

On Sunday, March 17th, the Greater Victoria Green Team gathered at Mystic Vale Woods at the University of Victoria in Saanich remove invasive plant species. Approximately 7 cubic metres of English Ivy was cleared from an area measuring approximately 250 sq. metres by 28 volunteers during the eco-restoration event.

The Greater Victoria Green Team has partnered with the University of Victoria Sustainability and Campus Planning department to organize 6 volunteer activities focused on remediation of the Mystic Vale Woods habitat. The next event is planned for April/May.
