Family Christmas carol sing-along with Victoria Philharmonic Choir

A great celebration of Christmas

Jeremy Bowes

Is there any greater celebration of Christmas than a multi-generational community sing-along?

At this magical annual event, Peter Butterfield conducts you, the audience, in favourite traditional carols, with the 50-voice VPC adding harmonies.  And there’s another treat in store for fans of the season’s musical classics, special guest Jeremy Bowes, who has just finished his second season with the Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden, returns to his home town of Victoria for this concert.

He and trumpeter Christopher Fenje will raise the roof with The Trumpet Shall Sound from Handel’s Messiah. The concert also features young up-and-coming soprano soloist Julia Hensley and St. Mary’s organist Curt Bergen, as well as some beautiful choral gems, including Bethlehem Down by Peter Warlock, Lullay my liking by Gustav Holst, and Andrew Carter’s arrangement of Jesus Christ the Apple Tree.

The concert is on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m., at St. Mary’s Church, 1701 Elgin in Oak Bay. Doors open at 6.30 p.m. and seating is first-come, first-served. A few benches at the front are reserved for families with small children, to make it easier for little ones to come up and join the choir.

Advance tickets are recommended: $20 adult, $10 student, free for children 12 and under, available at Ivy’s Bookshop, Cadboro Bay Book Co., Tanner’s Books, La Tavola Kitchenware Boutique, Long & McQuade Music and online at http://familychristmassingalongvpc.eventbrite.ca/
