Victoria Film Festival: La Vérité/Guilt

(Québec, 2011, 91 min. Subtitles) Inspired by actual events, La Vérité is the second in a tetralogy on the guilty conscience written and directed by Marc Bisaillon. The story follows teens Gabriel and Yves, captured perfectly by French Canadian actors Pierre-Luc LaFontaine adn Emile Mailhiot, as they get into more-than-typical mischief in the small town of St. Hyacinthe, Quebec.

The film follows the pair as they cheat their way through school and other familiar teen-life situations, climaxing in a homicide after a night of drugs and drinking.

Guilt realistically portrays modern-teenage male behaviour - from Gabriel dancing playfully with his mother in their living room to teen partying - exaggerated to murder. The film also allows the boys' guilty consciences to emerge slowly without feeling contrived.

As Yves chooses to leave town and train for the fire department, the film focusses on Gabriel following his growing depression and intense downward spiral leading him to make a choice which will impact both boys and their families.
