Youth orchestra tunes up for classics

The concert is March 1 at University Centre Farquhar Auditorium

The cavalry’s coming – musically speaking – as Yariv Aloni conducts the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra as it performs Light Cavalry Overture by Franz von Suppé, complete with bugle, fanfare, and cantering horses.

Reynolds High School Band joins the orchestra for Longfield’s Fantasia on the English hymn tune Kingsfold.  The concert’s military theme is taken up again in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ English Folk Song Suite, which, despite its pastoral-sounding name, was originally penned for military band.

The music incorporates traditional melodies such as Seventeen Come Sunday, My Bonny Boy and John Barleycorn.

Capping off the concert will be the Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar, performed by the GVYO.

Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra is conducted by Yariv Aloni.

The concert is March 1 at University Centre Farquhar Auditorium, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
