In a remarkable full-circle journey, the Canadian College of Performing Arts (CCPA) announced the appointment of Erin Gavaghan as its new managing director, effective late October 2024.

Twenty-five years after leaving Vancouver Island to pursue a career in the U.K., Gavaghan is set to return home, bringing with her a wealth of international experience in arts administration. This homecoming coincides with CCPA's own 25th anniversary, marking a new chapter for both Gavaghan and the institution.

"It's a unique alignment," said Roxanne Helme, chair of CCPA's Board of Governors. "As we celebrate our silver jubilee, we're thrilled to welcome Erin back to Victoria. Her journey from a local student to an international arts leader perfectly embodies the aspirations we have for all our graduates."

Gavaghan's career trajectory reads like a road map of the arts world. After earning her English literature and theatre degree from the University of Victoria, she embarked on a 25-year odyssey in the U.K. Her roles have spanned from the prestigious Soho Theatre and Royal Albert Hall to executive positions at contemporary dance company Siobhan Davies Dance and, most recently, as executive director of Clean Break, a theatre company working with women affected by the criminal justice system.

"When I left Victoria as a young graduate, I couldn't have imagined the journey ahead," Gavaghan reflected. "Now, to return and contribute to the next generation of performing artists in my hometown – it's a privilege that brings my career full circle."

The symmetry of Gavaghan's 25-year career abroad aligning with CCPA's 25th anniversary is more than just a coincidence. It represents a pivotal moment for the institution as it reflects on its past and looks toward its future. Gavaghan's appointment signifies a new era for the Oak Bay-based college, blending its established traditions with fresh, international perspectives.

"CCPA has spent a quarter-century nurturing Canadian talent," Helme noted. "Now, as we enter our next 25 years, we're bringing home one of our own to lead the way."

Gavaghan sees the 25th anniversary as not just a celebration of CCPA’s past but as a launching point for the institution’s future.
