The beloved Esquimalt Recreation Centre has reached its 50th year of providing wellness, community and opportunities for living an active lifestyle.
Since opening its doors on Dec. 12, 1974, the centre has grown into a hub where people of all ages com together to build relationships, achieve fitness goals and create memories according to the Township of Esquimalt.
Over the decades, the centre has acted as a cornerstone for "countless" events and gatherings.
“As we look forward to the next 50 years, the future is bright,” said Mayor Barbara Desjardins in a news release. “With new programs on the horizon and a continued focus on holistic health and wellness, we are excited to continue our mission of growth and community connection.”
To celebrate the anniversary, Esquimalt Parks and Recreation held a Jazzercise class on Dec. 12— a fitness trend that defined the 1970s and played a pivotal role in shaping the fitness landscape of the 1980s.
Visitors can also visit the display at Esquimalt Municipal Hall by the Esquimalt Archives which features historical images and artifacts from the early days of the centre.
