PHOTOS: Car drives into Victoria storefront window

A bar on the window stopped the car entering further into the store

Kate Harding got an abrupt surprise as she was closing up her store Showcase Awards & Recognition in Wednesday (May 22) evening.

“I just finished turning off the open signs, and luckily I just went around the corner to resume work on the laser and heard this horrific crash, it sounded like an explosion,” said Harding, who owns and manages the Blanshard Street store that shares a parking lot with Wendy’s.

At about 5:10 p.m. a car had plowed right into the store’s front window.

“It was really kind of surreal,” she told Black Press on Friday morning. “I couldn’t quite comprehend what was happening when I first looked at it.”

The car had thankfully been stopped by a bar on the store’s industrial windows.

“That stopped it from continuing on its path, which would have been really bad,” she added.

Police were called to the scene immediately, and Harding said the driver left in a police vehicle.

A spokesperson for the Victoria Police Department said the driver was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and the car was towed away.

Workers from The City of Victoria arrived soon after to help board up the window and secure the shop.

“Thank heavens nobody was hurt,” Harding said.
