Local art was on display during the 2023 Township Community Arts Council Chalk Party at Esquimalt Town Square.
The free event took place Saturday and Sunday and attendees got to see local artists Scott Gillies, Dahlila Charlie, Jesse Campbell, Teresa Waclawik and Lydia Beauregard in action.
“We’re just happy to have a community art event and celebrate this great space we have,” said Gillies, who was also the event’s main organizer. “It promotes creativity. We’ve had people of all ages enjoying the artwork.”
The art, including 3D chalk drawings, filled the square and there was even a kids’ zone.
“It was so great to see the kids doing art,” Gillies said. “Every time I’ve done chalk art, kids want to get involved.”
There was also live music from local musicians Kurt Loewen and Lance Carr.
The Chalk Party was first held last year at Saxe Point with Gillies being the only featured artist.
“Esquimalt Town Square is a better place for community engagement,” Gillies added. “The Township Community Arts Council wanted to scale it up this year.”
Gillies hopes this will become an annual event.
“It sometimes takes a while to gain name recognition in the community,” Gillies said. “We would love to have even more artists next year.”
